Visiting the Roswell Riverwalk

As part of the Driving Tour, the Design Team visited the Roswell Riverwalk with the City of Roswell. The Riverwalk path draws in birdwatchers, cyclists, joggers, families, and friends with 7 miles of public off-road paths along the River. The Roswell Riverwalk connects many destinations including the Chattahoochee Nature Center, Azalea Park, Riverside Park, the Don White Memorial Park and new parks that are currently being developed. The Riverwalk gives nature enthusiasts access to the unique mudflats along the River that are part of the long migratory bird flyway, providing for great bird watching. The Riverwalk boardwalk was constructed to minimize the impact to the ecosystem with use of helical screw piles that create a strong foundation with only a small drilled hole for each pile. The 7-mile path attracts many users, including people from outside of Roswell between Memorial Day and Labor Day in the summers. Moving forward, the City of Roswell is looking to increase bike access to the site in the future allowing for people to get to the Riverwalk without using a car.

This site visit was part of the 100-mile Windshield Driving Tour – a multi-day driving tour along the banks of the full 100-mile river corridor from December 10-14, 2018. The tour allowed the Design Team to ground truth GIS data with on-the-ground site explorations, photography and video documentation. The Design Team engaged with the community members and interviewed stakeholders on the river as face-to-face research that informs the project and forces an authentic identity for the Chattahoochee RiverLands Greenway.
