Fulton County Airport-Brown Field Visit

On Friday, August 23rd, the Project Team visited the Fulton County Airport-Brown Field with Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann, who represents District 1 of Atlanta. Hausmann and Tim Beggerly (Airport Manager) gave the Project Team a tour of the areas adjacent to the Chattahoochee River and its tributary, Sandy Creek. Now in her third term, Hausmann continues to serve as a leading voice in Metro Atlanta’s transit discussions. At the same time, she is advising on the Chattahoochee RiverLands Greenway Study, the redevelopment of Fort McPherson, the modernization of Fulton County Airport-Brown Field, and serves on the Board of Managers for the Associated County Commissioners of Georgia, representing the organization’s 3rd District.

Near the Fulton County Airport-Brown Field, the Chattahoochee River is mostly hidden by amid steep elevation changes overgrown with weeds, privet, and kudzu. A road currently used to maintain the perimeter fence could be one catalyst to imagine a more active relationship between the Airport and River. In order to get to the River’s edge, the Team bushwhacked their way through the overgrowth to see the view.

Today, the Fulton County Airport-Brown Field encompasses 985 acres, including an air traffic control tower and fire station, which are manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Annual Operations include approximately 56,000 take-offs and landings. Fulton County Airport-Brown Field plays a vital role in the local and regional economy – it supports 1,184 jobs with an annual payroll of $62M and produces $158M in economic output each year.
