Chattahoochee Brick Memorial Park and Greenspace is a transformative public project along the Chattahoochee River in northwest Atlanta that will honor the lives and labor of those who were forced to work at the former Chattahoochee Brick Company while creating a new riverside park and greenspace for all Atlantans. The City of Atlanta acquired the 75-acre site in August 2022 with the express intention of creating a memorial, public park, and greenspace that acknowledges the site’s history and expands equitable access to the riverfront.
The park will be part of the Atlanta RiverLands vision, a regional effort to activate the Chattahoochee River corridor with greenways, blueways, trails, parks, and water access points—a network that connects people to nature, recreation, and each other across multiple jurisdictions.

Chattahoochee Brick Memorial Park and Greenspace is being designed to balance commemoration, environmental restoration, and public access. Planned features include walking paths, contemplative gathering spaces, interpretive and memorial elements, and river overlooks that reconnect visitors to the Chattahoochee River. Native plantings and naturalized landscapes will support habitat restoration while creating a quiet, reflective environment appropriate to the site’s history.
The planning and design process is managed by the Department of City Planning (DCP) on behalf of the City of Atlanta (CoA). The design team is coordinating a multidisciplinary team that includes historians, archaeologists, and interpretation specialists to ensure the park’s design is grounded in environmental stewardship and historical integrity. Archaeological research is informing how the site’s physical history is protected and thoughtfully incorporated into the landscape, while interpretive planning is shaping how the site’s stories are shared through memorial and educational elements.
Community engagement is an ongoing and integral part of this work. Through a continuing series of public meetings, workshops, and opportunities for feedback, community members, descendants, historians, and advocates are actively helping guide the evolving design. This sustained engagement ensures the park reflects shared values of truth-telling, respect, and remembrance, and remains responsive to community voices as planning and design move forward.
The Chattahoochee Brick Company operated from the late 19th into the early 20th century, relying heavily on convict leasing—a system that forced primarily Black men into harsh and often deadly labor conditions. The site stands as a powerful reminder of this history and its lasting impact on Atlanta and the region.
The creation of Chattahoochee Brick Memorial Park and Greenspace represents a commitment to acknowledging this past while reimagining the future of the Chattahoochee River corridor. Environmental remediation and landscape restoration are central to the project, ensuring the land can safely serve as a public greenspace while supporting long-term ecological health.
As planning and design continue, the park will emerge as a place where history, landscape, and community come together—offering space for remembrance, education, and healing, while reclaiming the river as a shared public resource for generations to come.
The Chattahoochee Brick site is currently in the planning phase. Following the completion of planning and visioning efforts, scheduled to conclude in October 2026, the project will move into final design, documentation, permitting, and construction.

Chattahoochee RiverLands Pedestrian Trail Bridge
The City of Smyrna and Trust for Public Land are exploring a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Chattahoochee River. This bridge could improve connections between existing and planned trail systems in Smyrna and Atlanta while creating new opportunities for recreation, mobility, and access to the river. Share your input on project priorities, potential uses, and how this connection could serve the community.
