Join Self-Preservation Society and West Atlanta Watershed Alliance for a friendly introduction to kayaking with Sylvester Pierce—an ACA-certified instructor and founder of the Self-Preservation Society. Whether you’re a total beginner or just looking to get back on the water, this is a great chance to learn the basics in a supportive setting.

Spots are limited. Attendees must be 15 or older to participate. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees do not have to know how to swim to participate, this is a beginner-friendly event in every way. A significant amount of the morning schedule will be spent reviewing safety procedures before transitioning to getting comfortable in the water.

 

What to Bring:

  • Towel
  • Spare clothes
  • Snacks (no tree nuts, please)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sunscreen

What to wear: (Avoid cotton clothes, if possible)

  • Quick-drying, water wicking shirt
  • Gym Shorts or Swim Trunks
  • Old Tennis Shoes, Closed-toe Sandals or water shoes
  • Hat with wind strap or chin cord
  • Sunglasses (sunglass strap recommended)

  • Kayaks
  • PFDs
  • Sunscreen
  • Light refreshments
  • Water
  • Gatorade
  • Safety whistle

 

Sweetwater Creek State Park requires all patrons to purchase a $5 daily parking pass upon entrance to the park. Carpooling is recommended.
